How to Use Muse Spark in Meta AI: Setup, Modes and Prompts
Meta AI used to be the assistant you'd stumble into by accident, in a WhatsApp search bar you meant to use for something else. Since Muse Spark arrived in April, it's become something you can actually choose to use, with its own app, a website and three modes that behave quite differently. This guide skips the hype and covers the practical part: how to get in, what each mode is good for, prompts worth trying, and what to keep out of the conversation.
How do you use Muse Spark in Meta AI?
Go to meta.ai or open the Meta AI app, sign in with a Facebook or Instagram account, pick Instant, Thinking or Contemplating, then type, speak or share a photo. It's free and launched in the US first, with Meta's other apps and its glasses getting it in stages.
Step by step, with what can go wrong
- Open Meta AI. Use meta.ai in a browser, or find the Meta AI app in your app store. If it isn't offered in your country yet, that's the likely reason, since the launch began in the US and widened afterwards.
- Sign in. Launch coverage said you could use a Facebook or Instagram account. If you don't have either, check whether your region offers another sign-in option.
- Look at the privacy settings first. Meta AI is woven into social apps, so it's worth knowing what's shared before you start talking to it.
- Pick a mode. Instant is the default for quick questions. Switch to Thinking for harder problems.
- Ask in plain language. You can type, speak or add a photo, and it handles questions about images.
- Ask it to go deeper when it matters. If Contemplating isn't in the mode picker for you, reviewers reported you could request it by asking it to think carefully or use that mode in your prompt.
If an answer feels shallow, the usual fix isn't a different mode, it's a better question. The structure in the Claude master prompt template works here too: say who you are, what you need and how you want the answer shaped.
Which mode for which job
| Mode | Speed | Use it for | Skip it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instant | Fast | Quick facts, short drafts, casual chat, translations | Multi-step maths or planning |
| Thinking | Slower | Study questions, comparing options, step-by-step problems | A one-line lookup |
| Contemplating | Slowest | Research, big decisions, analysis with many moving parts | Anything you need in five seconds |
Eight tasks to try, with prompts that work
| Task | Try this prompt |
|---|---|
| Understand a photo | Here's a photo of my router's back panel. Tell me what each port is for and which one I plug my laptop into. |
| Plan a trip | Plan a three-day trip to [city] for someone who dislikes crowds. Give each day a theme and a rain backup. |
| Study for a test | Quiz me on [topic] one question at a time and explain each wrong answer before moving on. |
| Decode a chart | Here's a chart from my report. What does it show, and what's one thing the chart doesn't prove? |
| Compare products | Compare these two phones for battery life and camera. Say where your information might be out of date. |
| Write a hard message | Help me tell a friend I can't come to their event. Keep it warm, honest and under 60 words. |
| Check your own work | I'll paste my answer. Don't fix it. Tell me what's weakest and ask me a question that helps me improve it. |
| Analyze a file | Here's a spreadsheet of my monthly spending. Group it into categories and point out the three biggest changes. |
The study and writing prompts pair well with the free tools covered in the free AI tools for students guide, and if you use Meta AI for messages, the free AI email writer guide has a checklist for catching the filler that makes AI drafts sound robotic.
A prompt template for Contemplating mode
Deeper modes reward a clear brief, because they spend their extra effort on exactly what you ask for. This template makes the task, the constraints and the evidence rules explicit.
Use your deepest reasoning mode for this.
Question: [what I need decided or understood]
Context: [what I already know, and my constraints]
What would change my mind: [facts that would flip the answer]
Please:
1. Give your answer in one paragraph first.
2. Show the main alternatives you considered and why you rejected them.
3. List the three assumptions your answer depends on most.
4. Say which parts are well established and which are your inference.
5. Tell me what I should verify myself, and where.
If you are not sure about something, say so instead of guessing.
Where else you'll meet it
Meta has been rolling Meta AI into its own apps, including search bars and chats in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, and into its smart glasses. The rollout is staged by country and account, so what you see can differ from what a friend sees. The standalone app and meta.ai remain the most consistent way in.
Privacy basics worth five minutes
- Keep sensitive details out. Don't type passwords, ID numbers, health records or anything about other people that you wouldn't say in public.
- Check what the app shares. Look through the privacy and activity settings before you start, and again after major updates.
- Treat photos carefully. A photo can show locations and other people. Crop or blur what the question doesn't need.
- Verify anything that matters. For medical, legal or financial questions, use the answer as a starting point for a conversation with a professional.
If it isn't working
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Meta AI isn't available | Launch began in the US and expanded in stages | Check Meta's help pages for your country |
| I can't see Contemplating | Gradual rollout, or account differences | Ask for deeper reasoning in your prompt |
| Sign-in fails | Account or region restriction | Try the app and the website both |
| Answers feel generic | Short prompts with no context | Add who you are, your goal and the format you want |
| It got a fact wrong | Any model can | Ask where it's unsure and check a primary source |
If you want the background on what the model is and how it compares with the Llama family, the what is Meta Muse Spark explainer covers it.
Frequently asked questions
Sources and what I could not verify
- What I read: Meta's launch announcement, coverage from Engadget and Tom's Guide, several how-to explainers from April to August, and marketer-focused write-ups. I haven't used the app on my own account.
- Agreed across sources: access through meta.ai and the Meta AI app, three modes, free use and a US-first launch.
- Single-source: sign-in with a Facebook or Instagram account and the tip about requesting Contemplating by asking for it come from launch-period coverage. Interfaces change, so what you see wins.
- Not verified: current country availability, file-size limits for uploads and any usage caps.
